Where it came from
Eternal Scourge was released in 2016 as part of the Eldritch Moon expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a rare creature card featuring the devoid mechanic and a unique graveyard-exile utility, it was designed to be a resilient threat that defies traditional removal. The promo version, marked with the collector number 7s, was distributed through official Wizards of the Coast organized play channels, specifically as a participation or prize card to encourage local tournament engagement during the set's release window.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, whose work captures the grotesque, otherworldly aesthetic central to the Eldritch Moon storyline. Voss aimed to visually represent the consuming, persistent nature of the Eldrazi horrors through distorted anatomy and haunting lighting. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its tactical synergy with mechanics that involve exiling cards, ultimately finding a lasting niche in various eternal constructed formats due to its ability to be cast repeatedly from exile.
