Where it came from
Eternal Skylord was released in 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt Commander set. This expansion was designed to coincide with the main set's return to the fan-favorite gothic horror plane of Innistrad, focusing on themes of survival, day-night cycles, and the resurgence of traditional creature types like spirits and zombies. The card was created to provide mechanical support for the 'spellslinger' and tribal spirit archetypes, specifically emphasizing the synergy between casting noncreature spells and empowering ethereal forces.
The art and design of the card reflect the gloomy, supernatural aesthetic typical of the setting. Illustrators for the Midnight Hunt series aimed to capture the oppressive atmosphere of an eternal dusk, utilizing a palette of deep blues and purples to emphasize the ghostly, transcendent nature of the spirits roaming the landscape. Upon release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its ability to grant flying to zombie tokens, making it a functional utility piece in decks built around graveyard recursion and battlefield control.
