Where it came from
The Eternity Vessel was released in 2009 as part of the Zendikar expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Conceptually, it represents a massive, ancient artifact utilized by the enigmatic Kor race of the Zendikar plane to trap the Eldrazi titans. The design team created this card as a high-mana rare artifact, intended to serve as a powerful late-game stabilization tool that resets a player’s life total to its starting value whenever it enters the battlefield or is activated.
The card’s illustration was rendered by artist Whit Brachna, who emphasized a sense of scale and cosmic weight to reflect the artifact’s lore as a prison for world-ending entities. Within the game’s competitive history, the Eternity Vessel is remembered as a card that prioritizes high-impact effects over efficiency, fitting into the 'battlecruiser' style of play encouraged by the set’s focus on high-cost, world-altering spells and complex artifact mechanics.
