Where it came from
Nissa's Chosen was released in the 2009 Zendikar set as a common card designed to support the set's tribal focus on Elves. It serves as an early example of planeswalker-specific synergy, created to function alongside Nissa Revane, the planeswalker introduced in the same set. The card was intended to provide players with a reliable, searchable creature that reflected the flavor of Zendikar's indigenous elven population.
The card features artwork by illustrator Jaime Jones, who sought to capture the rugged, adventurous aesthetic of the Zendikar plane. Jones rendered the character with a focus on natural textures and earthy tones, aligning with the art direction's goal of emphasizing a wilderness-focused world. Upon its release, the card was received as a straightforward, functional tool for casual deck-building, particularly for those looking to maximize the efficiency of Nissa Revane's abilities.
