Where it came from
Ethereal Absolution was released as part of the Ravnica Allegiance set in early 2019, specifically appearing as a promotional card for the Orzhov Syndicate. This card embodies the aesthetic of the Orzhov, the guild governing Ravnica’s finances and funerary rites, characterized by a stark contrast between black and white mana symbols. The card represents the guild's authority to enforce its will through both physical presence and spectral manipulation, reflecting the complex, hierarchical nature of Ravnica’s society.
The artwork for this piece was crafted by illustrator Igor Kieryluk, who is well known for his contribution to the Magic: The Gathering universe. Kieryluk sought to capture the oppressive yet divine atmosphere of the Syndicate, utilizing a color palette dominated by white marble, gold, and dark shadows. Upon its release, the card was well received by players for its thematic consistency and its mechanical utility in limited formats, where it served as a powerful tool for controlling the battlefield.
