Where it came from
Seraph of the Scales was released as part of the Ravnica Allegiance set in early 2019, specifically appearing as a promotional card for the Orzhov Syndicate. In the lore of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse, the Orzhov are a corrupt, guild-based hierarchy that functions as both a religious institution and a crime syndicate. This card was designed to represent the guild's dual nature, featuring the keyword mechanics Afterlife and Vigilance to mirror its thematic focus on death, judgment, and tax-collecting penance.
The artwork was illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, an artist known for his contributions to the darker, more atmospheric corners of the game's visuals. The design team focused on a split-alignment aesthetic, utilizing a stark contrast between light and shadow to embody the Seraph's role as a fallen yet powerful arbiter of justice. The card was well-received by players for its tactical flexibility in limited formats, cementing its place as a quintessential representative of the Orzhov aesthetic during the Ravnica Allegiance release cycle.
