Where it came from
Ethereal Usher was released in 2005 as part of the Ravnica: City of Guilds expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set introduced the concept of guild-themed mechanics, and the Usher belongs to the House Dimir, a guild known for secrecy, information brokering, and espionage. The card was designed to support the 'transmute' mechanic, which allowed players to discard the card to search their library for another card with the same mana cost, emphasizing the guild's role in covert manipulation.
The artwork for the card was created by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific illustrator whose work is characterized by a dark, atmospheric style that fits the gothic-inspired urban setting of Ravnica. Briclot depicted the Usher as a ghostly, hooded figure emerging from the city's shadows, visually reinforcing the Dimir identity. The card was generally well-received by players of the era as a versatile utility tool, valued more for its strategic flexibility in deck construction than for its offensive capabilities on the battlefield.
