Provenance

Where it came from

Ethereal Investigator was released in 2021 as part of the Spirit Squadron deck for the Magic: The Gathering expansion, Innistrad: Crimson Vow. The card was designed to support the 'Investigate' mechanic, which revolves around creating Clue tokens that provide card advantage, specifically within a white-blue color identity focused on spirits and ghostly themes.

The card's art was created by illustrator Zezhou Chen, who utilized a moody, atmospheric aesthetic characteristic of the gothic horror setting of Innistrad. The design captures the essence of a spectral detective peering into the afterlife, aligning with the set's narrative of investigators navigating a world overrun by vampires and restless spirits.
