Evangel of Heliod

Evangel of Heliod was released in 2013 as part of the Theros set, the inaugural entry in a block heavily inspired by Greek mythology. The card was designed to mechanically represent the piety and divine devotion central to the plane's flavor, rewarding players for their dedication to the white mana-aligned god Heliod. This focus on enchantment-based synergy was a core pillar of the set's design philosophy, aiming to bridge the gap between abstract resource management and the thematic narrative of mortal heroes serving celestial beings.

The artwork for this card was crafted by Johannes Voss, whose contributions to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic are noted for their ethereal lighting and clear, evocative character work. Voss sought to capture the solemn dignity of a follower in the midst of a religious fervor, balancing the warrior aspects of Theros with the mystical influence of the sun god. Upon release, the card became a staple of the 'white weenie' archetype during limited play formats, widely praised for its ability to stabilize a board presence while reinforcing the set's distinct enchantment-heavy mechanical identity.
