Where it came from
Evangelize was released in 2006 as part of the Time Spiral expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was notable for its heavy emphasis on nostalgia, featuring mechanics and cards that referenced the game's first decade. As a rare white sorcery, Evangelize was designed to fit into the set's theme of 'timeshifted' mechanics, specifically mirroring the powerful, game-altering effects found in earlier eras of the game.
The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, whose work often features high-contrast, atmospheric figures. For this piece, Staples focused on the visual motif of a singular, commanding orator swaying a gathered crowd, which aligns with the card’s mechanical function of forcing an opponent to hand over their creatures. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche, high-mana-cost control tool, recognized primarily for its unique ability to disrupt board states in multiplayer formats like Commander.
