Where it came from
Even the Score was released as part of the Streets of New Capenna promotional suite in 2022. The set drew heavily from 1920s Art Deco aesthetics and noir-inspired gangster tropes, reflecting the world of New Capenna where five crime families vie for control of the city. The design intent for this card was to evoke the high-stakes, cinematic tension of a classic heist or a confrontation between syndicate leaders, placing players firmly within the opulent and dangerous environment of the plane.
The artwork, executed by artist Bram Sels, utilizes the distinctive stylized and gilded visual language that defines the New Capenna aesthetic. By emphasizing geometric patterns and a rich, metallic color palette, the illustration aims to capture the refined decadence of the city's elite. Upon release, the card was noted for its integration into the set's unique 'Gilded Foil' treatment, which was designed to highlight the intricate architecture and wealth central to the narrative of the city.
