Where it came from
Even the Score was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna set for Magic: The Gathering. The set is themed around a 1920s-inspired, Art Deco metropolis controlled by five competing demon-led crime families. This card was designed to reflect the mechanics of the 'Alliance' keyword, which rewards players for building their board presence with creatures, capturing the competitive and opportunistic atmosphere of the city's power struggles.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose work frequently appears in the game. The visual composition captures the high-stakes, noir-adjacent aesthetic of New Capenna, focusing on the tactical depth of the game's mechanics rather than a specific narrative beat. Upon its release, it was noted by players as a functional piece of card advantage in limited formats, fitting well within the set’s focus on resource management and strategic maneuvering.
