Ever-Watching Threshold

Ever-Watching Threshold was released as part of the Starter Commander Decks in 2022, a product line designed by Wizards of the Coast to provide accessible, ready-to-play entry points for the Commander format. The card was included in the 'Grave Danger' deck, which focused on the Dimir color identity, reflecting the set's broader goal of introducing new players to the strategic depth of multi-player Magic: The Gathering without the complexity of traditional expansion releases.

The card features artwork by Wisnu Tan, who utilized a dark, atmospheric aesthetic to emphasize the enchantment's role in punishing opponents for playing multiple spells. In the context of the game's mechanics, the design builds upon the established tradition of 'taxing' effects, which require players to pay additional resources to maintain their momentum. It was generally received as a functional, flavorful inclusion for mid-range decks seeking to gain card advantage in a reactive meta.
