Where it came from
The Inspired Sphinx was released in 2022 as part of the Starter Commander Decks, a product line designed by Wizards of the Coast to provide accessible, ready-to-play entry points into the Commander format for Magic: The Gathering. As a blue-aligned creature card, it was crafted to offer a strong, repeatable card-advantage engine, fitting the Sphinx archetype's traditional association with wisdom and library manipulation in the game's lore.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized his signature ethereal and luminous style to depict the creature. Voss sought to emphasize the Sphinx's intellectual nature, capturing the aesthetic typical of high-fantasy Magic cards where the focus is on a balance between magical power and creature elegance. Upon its release, it was well-received by the player community as a staple inclusion for blue-based control and draw-focused decks.
