Where it came from
Exhibition Tidecaller was released as a promotional card within the Secrets of Strixhaven subset, distributed to players through various events surrounding the 2021 release of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focuses on the magical academy of Strixhaven, drawing heavy inspiration from academic themes and collegiate rivalries, with this specific card reflecting the blue-aligned Prismari or Quandrix aesthetic often associated with scholarly study and elemental manipulation.
The artwork for this piece was rendered by illustrator Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her clean, expressive fantasy portraiture. Her design emphasizes the theme of magical expertise, capturing the subject in a moment of intellectual focus. Upon release, the card was received as a functional, aesthetically cohesive addition to the promotional lineup, appreciated by collectors for its unique frame treatment and its role in highlighting the scholarly world-building of the Strixhaven plane.
