Where it came from
Expansion Algorithm was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander set. The card was designed to support the Prismari college, which emphasizes a blend of raw magical power and artistic expression. Its inclusion in the supplementary Commander product provided a functional tool for players focusing on spell-heavy, high-cost decks that benefit from flexible, modular gameplay.
The card features an illustration by the artist Milivoj Ćeran, known for his work across several Magic: The Gathering sets. In keeping with the aesthetic of Strixhaven, the artwork depicts the chaotic, brilliant nature of elemental magic, visually translating the concept of a 'variable algorithm' into the swirling, prismatic energies characteristic of the Prismari mages.
