Where it came from
Expansion Algorithm was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander set, specifically within the Prismari Performance deck. The card is designed to mechanically embody the artistic and destructive duality of the Prismari college, which emphasizes bold, expressive magic. By allowing a player to choose between creating a token creature or buffing an existing one based on the number of instant and sorcery cards in their graveyard, it functions as a versatile utility spell that rewards the spell-heavy playstyle characteristic of blue and red decks.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Livia Prima, who has illustrated numerous pieces for the Magic: The Gathering franchise. In this design, Prima captures the chaotic energy of magical experimentation, visualizing the interplay of raw elemental force and structured arcane formulas. The reception of the card among players has been generally positive, particularly within Commander circles, where its flexibility and synergy with graveyard-focused strategies make it a reliable choice for players building around spell-slinging mechanics.
