Provenance

Where it came from

Expedite was originally printed as a red sorcery card in the Oath of the Gatewatch expansion, released in early 2016. The card was designed to support aggressive deck archetypes by providing a low-cost method to grant haste to a creature while simultaneously replacing itself by drawing a card. This mechanic, known as a cantrip, was intended to keep the momentum of fast-paced gameplay moving forward without exhausting the player's resources.

The card features artwork by Lake Hurwitz, who aimed to capture the energetic and chaotic nature of the Eldrazi-themed expansion. Its inclusion in 'The List'—a rotating selection of cards from Magic: The Gathering's history—allowed the card to appear in set boosters starting in late 2020. This practice serves to reintroduce older cards into the modern ecosystem, keeping them accessible to players building diverse formats.
