Where it came from
Experimental Augury was released in 2023 as part of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The card depicts a moment within the narrative arc of New Phyrexia, where the Phyrexians conduct invasive experiments to refine their influence over the multiverse. This set focused on the horror of biological assimilation, a theme that has been central to the Phyrexian faction since their inception in the late 1990s.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who has contributed numerous illustrations to the game's expansive lore. His design for Experimental Augury emphasizes the cold, clinical nature of Phyrexian technology, using sharp angles and sterile, metallic color palettes to contrast with the organic subjects being studied. The piece was well-received by players for its ability to visually capture the unsettling atmosphere of the plane, serving as a distinct example of the set's broader aesthetic of mechanical perfection imposed upon living beings.
