Provenance

Where it came from

Exsanguinate was released in 2010 as part of the Scars of Mirrodin expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set marked the return to the metallic plane of Mirrodin, pitting its inhabitants against the corrupting influence of the Phyrexians. Mechanically, the card was designed as a powerful finisher for black-aligned decks, reflecting the theme of life-draining corruption that defined the Phyrexian faction's narrative presence in this block.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Vincent Proce, who rendered the visceral act of bloodletting in the stark, industrial aesthetic characteristic of the New Phyrexian aesthetic. The design was intended to balance the flavor of draining an opponent's life force with a scalable mana cost, making it a highly effective and widely utilized card in various formats, particularly within the Commander social format where its ability to drain multiple opponents simultaneously gained it notoriety.
