Provenance

Where it came from

Wing Puncture was released in 2010 as part of the Scars of Mirrodin expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set returned players to the plane of Mirrodin, a world constructed entirely of metal, which was then being corrupted by the oily, infectious influence of the Phyrexians. As a card depicting a conflict between the plane's native inhabitants and these encroaching forces, it served to illustrate the thematic tension and environmental decay central to the set's storyline.

The artwork was created by illustrator Matt Cavotta, a long-time contributor to the game who often infused his work with a blend of dark fantasy and mechanical precision. In designing the card's visual, Cavotta aimed to capture the visceral nature of the fight for survival on a metallic landscape. The piece was well-received by players for its dynamic framing, effectively conveying the aerodynamic vulnerability of the creature being targeted during the transition of the game world into New Phyrexia.
