Where it came from
The Eye of Ugin was released in 2010 as part of the Worldwake expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Within the game's lore, the card depicts a massive, cavernous structure on the plane of Zendikar, which serves as a nexus for the Eldrazi, ancient and incomprehensible beings that threaten the multiverse. Mechanically, it was designed to support the expansion's focus on colorless, high-mana-cost creatures, specifically providing a utility land that could tutor for and reduce the cost of these powerful entities.
The artwork was illustrated by James Paxten, who aimed to capture the alien and monumental scale of the Eldrazi's prison. The design reflects a departure from traditional land cards, functioning more like an artifact or engine within a deck. Upon its release, it was regarded as a niche utility card, though it later gained significant notoriety and competitive prominence as the engine for various high-powered combo decks, eventually leading to its restriction in several tournament formats.
