Provenance

Where it came from

Fade Away was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus set, the third and final installment of the Rath Cycle for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to introduce high-stakes mechanics and conclude the narrative arc involving the plane of Rath, with the card itself reflecting the chaotic and dwindling resources inherent to the game's evolving strategic landscape.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Jeff Miracola, whose distinctive style captures the ethereal, fading nature of the spell's effect. Miracola's illustration was intended to visually represent the card's mechanical utility of forcing players to sacrifice permanents, a common-rarity design choice meant to provide players with a situational yet potent tool for board control during the late nineties tournament meta.
