Where it came from
Faerie Formation was released in 2023 as part of the Wilds of Eldraine Commander set, a collection designed to expand upon the fairy-tale-inspired themes of the Eldraine plane. It was created to provide support for tribal-focused strategies, specifically rewarding players who prioritize Faerie creatures by offering both card draw and token generation mechanics.
The card features illustration by Wisnu Tan, who utilized a lush, ethereal aesthetic that aligns with the whimsical yet dangerous nature of the Fae in Magic: The Gathering lore. The design was well-received by players seeking utility engines for blue-black decks, praised for its ability to stabilize boards and maintain card advantage during the mid-to-late stages of a Commander game.
