Where it came from
Fain, the Broker was released in 2022 as part of The Brothers' War Commander set, a collection of cards designed to support the multiplayer Commander format within the broader Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. The character serves as a representative of the New Capenna plane, reflecting the faction-based aesthetics of the Brokers syndicate, known for their focus on legalistic power, contracts, and calculated manipulation.
The card’s visual identity was brought to life by artist Volkan Baga, who captured Fain’s opportunistic nature through his poised, scheming posture and opulent, art deco-inspired attire. The design emphasizes the 'broker' theme by offering players multiple avenues to generate value, rewarding those who can balance sacrifice with strategic gains, a mechanical expression of the character's role as a shadowy deal-maker.
