Where it came from
Alela, Artful Provocateur was originally introduced in the Throne of Eldraine Commander set in 2019, though this specific printing originates from the 2022 The Brothers' War Commander release as a featured inclusion in the Mishra's Burnished Banner deck. The character is depicted as a faerie warlock of the Court of Locthwain, embodying the duality of grace and menace characteristic of the set's fairy-tale inspired aesthetic. She was designed as a commander focused on the synergy between artifacts and enchantments, rewarding players for weaving complex board states through token generation and anthem effects.
The illustration for this iteration was created by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist within the Magic: The Gathering community known for her ethereal and detailed character portraits. Her design choice emphasizes Alela’s role as an instigator, utilizing vibrant, sharp visuals to convey her fae nature while maintaining the distinct visual language of the Brothers' War era. Upon release, the card was widely received as a cornerstone for players interested in synergistic, permanent-heavy strategies, maintaining its status as a popular choice for commander players due to its versatile utility.
