Where it came from
Faith of the Devoted was released in April 2017 as part of the Amonkhet expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set centers on a desert plane inspired by ancient Egyptian mythology, where the populace serves a god-pharaoh in hopes of achieving a glorious afterlife. Mechanically, the card was designed to support the 'cycling' keyword, a returning mechanic that allows players to discard cards to draw new ones, rewarding the player for burning through their resources in a display of religious fervor.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in the Magic: The Gathering artistic community. Villeneuve utilized high-contrast lighting and rich, desert-toned aesthetics to capture the somber yet ritualistic nature of the Amonkhet society. Upon its release, the card became a staple in niche control and combo archetypes, particularly in the Limited and Standard formats, where its ability to drain opponents' health while cycling cards provided a steady, attrition-based path to victory.
