Where it came from
The Fallaji Vanguard was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set The Brothers' War. The card depicts a soldier from the Fallaji, a desert-dwelling faction central to the lore of the set, which reimagines the historic conflict between the artificers Urza and Mishra on the plane of Dominaria. Its inclusion serves to ground the high-fantasy struggle in the cultural diversity of the continent of Terisiare, emphasizing the human cost of the industrial scale of the war.
The artwork, illustrated by Wisnu Tan, captures the rugged, nomadic aesthetic of the Fallaji forces, characterized by draped textiles and scavenged metallic weaponry. The design focuses on the creature's combat role as a Vanguard, utilizing a mechanical frame to reflect the set's broader theme of artifact-driven warfare. It was designed primarily as a common-rarity utility creature for the Limited format, providing players with a straightforward, aggressive option that rewards synergy with artifact-heavy deck builds.
