Where it came from
The Island card from the 2022 expansion The Brothers' War represents one of a cycle of full-art basic lands depicting the colossal machines and war-torn landscapes of Magic: The Gathering’s ancient past. Released to celebrate the game's 30th anniversary, the set revisits the conflict between the brothers Urza and Mishra, drawing heavily on themes of industrialization and catastrophic mechanical warfare. These specific cards were designed to evoke a sense of scale, emphasizing the wreckage of giant automatons against the natural environment.
The artwork for this particular Island was created by Adam Paquette, a veteran illustrator known for his expansive, atmospheric landscapes within the game. Paquette utilized a sweeping vista that integrates the discarded remnants of mechanical giants into a serene, icy maritime setting. The design was well-received by the player community, particularly for its minimalist aesthetic and its success in bridging the gap between the game’s high-fantasy roots and its recurring focus on artifacts and technological ruin.
