Falling Star

Falling Star was released in 1994 as part of the Legends expansion for Magic: The Gathering, the first set in the game's history to focus on introducing new mechanics rather than just expanding the core card pool. It was designed during a period when Wizards of the Coast was experimenting with highly literal interpretations of card themes, resulting in mechanics that relied on physical dexterity, such as flipping the card onto the play area to determine damage.

The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic illustrators from the early years of the game. His design sought to capture the chaotic energy of a meteor strike, aligning with the whimsical and often experimental design philosophy prevalent in the mid-90s. While the card is remembered for its unique, skill-based gameplay, it ultimately became a footnote in competitive history due to the impracticality of its physical requirements.
