Where it came from
Fall from Favor was released in the Commander Legends set in November 2020, a collection specifically designed for the multiplayer Commander format. The card functions as an aura that grants the enchanted creature an initiative-like effect by becoming the monarch, a mechanic originally debuted in Conspiracy: Take the Crown to encourage combat and interaction among players. It was intended to provide blue decks with a unique way to contest the monarch status, balancing its utility with the temporary nature of its enchantment effect.
The card features illustration by artist Livia Prima, who utilized a dramatic, sweeping style to depict a figure losing their grasp on royal power. The design reflects the high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the Commander Legends expansion, focusing on the political intrigue and shifting alliances common to the tabletop game. It was received by players as a niche but flavorful utility card, often utilized in limited-resource decks that prioritize the card-draw benefits associated with the monarch mechanic.
