Where it came from
Famished Foragers was released in 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to fit within the set's gothic horror aesthetic, which draws heavily from werewolf folklore and classic creature features. Mechanically, the card was intended to support the set's green-aligned 'coven' and 'daybound/nightbound' themes, representing the hunger and primal nature of the creatures inhabiting the plane of Innistrad.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Zezhou Chen, who sought to capture the feral, desperate energy of the foraging creatures under the dim, eerie moonlight characteristic of the setting. The illustration reflects the design team's goal of emphasizing the dark, autumnal atmosphere of the plane, and the card was generally well-received by players for its solid utility in limited formats and its contribution to the immersive, spooky narrative of the set.
