Famished Ghoul

Famished Ghoul was released in 2001 as part of the Odyssey expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set in the lush, dangerous world of Otaria, the expansion focused heavily on the graveyard as a secondary resource, introducing mechanics that incentivized players to discard cards or return creatures from their discard piles to play. As a common creature, the ghoul was designed to reinforce the set’s macabre, gothic aesthetic and support the black color alignment's themes of decay and resource manipulation.

The artwork was created by illustrator Thomas M. Baxa, whose signature dark and visceral style was a staple of the era's horror-influenced fantasy art. His depiction of the creature emphasizes the skeletal, starved nature of the undead within the Odyssey setting, grounding the game's mechanics in a tangible, unsettling visual narrative.
