Where it came from
Fangorn, Tree Shepherd was released in 2023 as part of The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, an ambitious 'Universes Beyond' expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked the first time the game integrated J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, blending high-fantasy literature with the established mechanics of the collectible card game. The card represents the leader of the Ents, the ancient shepherds of the forest who play a pivotal role in the defense of Middle-earth.
The artwork for this specific iteration of Fangorn was crafted by illustrator Alayna Danner. Her design focuses on the somber, towering presence of the Ent, emphasizing his connection to the woodland landscape through intricate bark textures and a weathered, contemplative expression. The card was well-received by players for its thematic resonance with the character's role in the books, particularly its ability to create Treefolk tokens, which mechanically mirrors the Ents’ rally to protect their realm.
