Where it came from
War of the Last Alliance was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth. This expansion represented the first major collaboration between the Wizards of the Coast flagship trading card game and J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, aiming to translate the epic scope of Middle-earth into the mechanics of high-fantasy card play.
The card features artwork by artist Magali Villeneuve, who was tasked with depicting the climactic battle at the foot of Mount Doom. Her design emphasizes the scale and weight of the conflict, capturing the desperation and heroism of the alliance between Elves and Men against the forces of Sauron. The card was well-received by players for its thematic resonance and its ability to mechanically represent the turning point of the Second Age.
