Provenance

Where it came from

Fatal Blow was released in 1997 as part of the Weatherlight expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the final set in the Mirage block, Weatherlight was notable for being the first set to heavily integrate narrative storytelling directly into the cards, centered around the titular airship and its crew. The card was designed as a common black spell, fitting the set's thematic focus on the sinister influences of the Phyrexian threat during the narrative's climax.

The artwork was illustrated by D. Alexander Gregory, whose style contributed to the dark, high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the era. The illustration depicts a grim, decisive strike, aligning with the card's function as a creature-removal spell. While not considered a marquee card in competitive play, it remains a recognized piece of 1990s Magic history, representing the specific visual and mechanical design language of Wizards of the Coast during the late nineties.
