Where it came from
Timid Drake was released in 1997 as part of the Weatherlight set, the final installment of the Mirage block in the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed during a period when Wizards of the Coast was deepening the narrative complexity of the game, the set served as a pivotal chapter in the overarching Weatherlight Saga, following the crew of the skyship Weatherlight as they navigated the multiversal conflicts of the period.
The card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, a highly regarded fantasy artist known for his painterly approach and atmospheric lighting. In this piece, Giancola captures the creature's apprehensive nature through its posture and gaze, leaning into the mechanical flavor of the card, which requires the drake to be returned to the owner's hand if it cannot be fed with other creatures. The card is viewed as a functional curiosity of its era, noted for its distinct thematic design that blends creature utility with the specific drawbacks characteristic of blue-aligned cards at the time.
