Where it came from
Faultgrinder was released in 2007 as part of the Lorwyn expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set in a pastoral, folklore-inspired plane, Lorwyn was designed to shift away from the grim themes of previous sets, focusing instead on high-fantasy tropes like elves, giants, and elemental creatures. As an elemental with the evoke mechanic, Faultgrinder was intended to provide tactical flexibility for red decks, allowing players to either cast it for its full cost or trigger a one-time land-destruction effect for a lower investment.
The card’s visual identity was crafted by artist Anthony S. Waters, a veteran illustrator for the game whose work is known for bold, painterly textures.
