Where it came from
Felidar Guardian was originally printed in the 2017 set Aether Revolt as part of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This specific version, labeled with collector number 1487★, originated from a 2022 Secret Lair drop. The Secret Lair series is a specialized line of curated, limited-release cards that often showcase unique, artist-driven aesthetics, moving away from the game’s standard mechanical design language to offer highly stylized, collectible interpretations of existing cards.
The art for this release was created by the artist Justine Jones, who utilized a distinct, dreamlike aesthetic that leans into the ethereal nature of the creature. The design process focused on reimagining the Felidar—a cat-like guardian creature from the plane of Kaladesh—with a softer, more vibrant color palette and intricate linework. Upon its release, the card was well-received by collectors who prioritize the premium, artistic presentation characteristic of the Secret Lair series over the standard card variants.
