Where it came from
Felidar Guardian was originally released in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering set Aether Revolt. The card quickly gained infamy within the competitive community due to its interaction with Saheeli Rai, which created an infinite combo that dominated the Standard format and led to its eventual banning. This specific printing originates from a 2022 Secret Lair drop titled Showcase: Streets of New Capenna, which reimagined popular cards through the stylized, art-deco lens of the New Capenna setting.
The artwork for this version was commissioned to evoke the architectural grandeur of the Plane of New Capenna, utilizing bold lines and a gold-leaf aesthetic typical of the set's signature treatment. Designed to appeal to collectors seeking premium, visually distinct versions of functional staples, this iteration shifted the card from a purely utilitarian competitive piece to a high-art showcase item. It was met with positive reception from players who appreciate the stylistic cohesion of the Secret Lair series.
