Where it came from
Fend Off was released in 1999 as part of Urza's Destiny, the final expansion in the Urza's Saga block. The set was designed during a period when Wizards of the Coast was pushing the boundaries of mechanical complexity, often focusing on powerful artifact interactions and enchantments. Within the lore of the Multiverse, this card reflects the defensive strategies employed during the Phyrexian invasion, serving as a tactical representation of protection magic used by the forces opposing Yawgmoth.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, a highly regarded fantasy artist known for his painterly style and ability to convey dynamic motion. Giancola aimed to capture the visceral moment of a magical redirection, emphasizing the flow of energy and the weight of the combatants. The card received a neutral reception upon release, largely viewed by players as a niche utility spell that struggled to find a consistent place in the fast-paced competitive environments of the late 1990s.
