Fetid Pools

Fetid Pools was originally introduced in the Amonkhet expansion of Magic: The Gathering as part of a cycle of allied-color cycling lands. The card was designed to provide utility in both the early and late stages of a game by offering players the choice to play it as a tapped land for mana or discard it to draw a new card, a mechanic that emphasizes flexibility and resource management. Its inclusion in the Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander set reflects the card's enduring popularity in the Commander format, where efficient mana fixing and card filtering are highly valued by players.

The atmospheric illustration for this card was created by artist Titus Lunter, who is well-regarded for his evocative landscapes in the game. Lunter’s design for Fetid Pools leans into the grim, swampy aesthetic of its source plane, utilizing muted tones and murky textures to convey a sense of decaying stagnant water. The artwork received positive attention from players for its ability to capture the feeling of the Amonkhet wasteland, successfully blending thematic storytelling with the card's functional role as a land that provides both black and blue mana.
