Where it came from
Field Surgeon was released in 1999 as part of the Urza's Destiny expansion, the third and final set in the Urza block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed to conclude the complex narrative arc surrounding the artificer Urza and featured mechanics heavily centered on artifacts and permanents. The card represents the specialized medical units within the Benalish army during the ongoing conflicts of the era, reflecting the set's focus on high-fantasy warfare and tactical support.
The artwork for Field Surgeon was illustrated by Randy Elliott, who contributed several pieces to the Urza's block. His illustration captures the utilitarian, armored aesthetic common to the soldiers of the Benalish realm, emphasizing the card's function as a defensive damage-prevention tool. Upon its release, the card was regarded as a functional utility piece for limited play environments, serving as a standard example of the white mana color identity's focus on protection and healing.
