Where it came from
Fields of Summer was released as part of the Planechase Anthology, a 2016 compilation set designed to revitalize the multiplayer Planechase format for Magic: The Gathering. As a 'plane' card, it is not part of a standard deck but serves as a global environment that shifts the rules of play for all participants. The card represents the plane of Lorwyn, a setting inspired by Celtic and Germanic folklore that debuted in the 2007 Lorwyn expansion, intended to evoke a whimsical yet hazardous pastoral landscape.
The artwork was created by illustrator Steve Argyle, whose work is characterized by a high-fantasy aesthetic with vibrant lighting and detailed environmental storytelling. The design of the card emphasizes the theme of growth and mana acceleration, reflecting the fertile, sun-drenched nature of the plane. Upon its release in the Anthology, it was well-received by fans of the format for its ability to speed up gameplay, providing a mechanical utility that bridges the gap between the game's competitive nature and its thematic roots in nature-heavy fantasy.
