Fire Drake

Fire Drake was originally printed for the Magic: The Gathering Fifth Edition base set, released in 1997. As part of a core set intended to provide a comprehensive pool of cards for players, it represents the foundational dragon-kin creature types that defined early red-aligned deck strategies. The illustration by Dan Frazier captures the creature’s elemental nature, emphasizing the fiery aesthetics that became a hallmark of the game's initial visual identity during the late nineties.

The card was designed to function as a mid-range creature with a direct-damage ability, a common balancing tactic for creatures in early editions. Dan Frazier, a veteran artist from the game's earliest days, utilized a bold, illustrative style that prioritized immediate recognition on the tabletop. Within the context of Fifth Edition, the card served as a bridge between the complexity of expansions and the accessibility of the core game, often noted by collectors for its classic aesthetic that evokes the nostalgic era of early nineties trading card game design.
