Fire // Ice

Fire // Ice was originally released in the 2001 Apocalypse expansion as a split card, a novel mechanic that allowed players to choose one of two distinct effects on a single card. The World Championship Decks 2002 version featuring this card was designed to replicate the specific tournament-winning deck lists used by competitors at the 2002 Magic: The Gathering World Championship. These decks were printed with gold-bordered backs and silver-foil signatures of the players to distinguish them from standard tournament-legal cards while commemorating the high level of play at the event.

The art for both halves of the card was created by artist Christopher Rush, a legendary figure in the game's history known for his iconic work on the original Black Lotus. Rush utilized a sharp, elemental visual language to differentiate the red-aligned damage of Fire from the blue-aligned tapping effect of Ice. The card itself became a staple in professional play due to its extreme versatility, offering both board control and direct damage in a single low-cost slot, which cemented its legacy as one of the most efficient spells in the game's history.
