Where it came from
Fire // Ice was originally released in the 2001 Apocalypse expansion as a split card, introducing a unique mechanic that allowed players to choose between two distinct effects on a single card. Its inclusion in Modern Horizons 2, a set designed specifically to inject cards directly into the Modern format, provided an opportunity to modernize its frame and artwork while maintaining its legacy as a flexible utility spell for tempo-oriented decks.
The Modern Horizons 2 version features new, evocative illustration by Johannes Voss. Voss focused on a stylized, elemental aesthetic that emphasizes the duality of the two effects, with flames and frost swirling in a balanced composition. This interpretation was well-received by the community for its clarity and artistic merit, successfully updating a functional classic with a contemporary visual language that complements the set's high-fantasy theme.
