Firebreathing

Firebreathing is one of the foundational cards of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, appearing in the original Alpha set in 1993 and remaining a staple of the core sets for over a decade. It was designed by Richard Garfield to represent the fundamental red-aligned strategy of aggressive power spikes, providing a simple, repeatable mana-sink mechanic that allowed creatures to trade long-term resources for immediate combat efficiency.

The Tenth Edition version, featuring the collector number 200, utilized artwork by illustrator Dan Dos Santos. His contribution moved away from the whimsical styles of the early 90s toward a more polished, high-fantasy aesthetic that defined the visual identity of the modern core set era. While the card itself is mechanically straightforward and ubiquitous, its inclusion in Tenth Edition marked a stylistic transition period for the game as it updated classic cards with contemporary digital painting techniques.
