Firebreathing

Firebreathing has been a cornerstone of the Magic: The Gathering library since the game's initial release in 1993, serving as one of the quintessential red enchantments that grants a creature the ability to gain power through the expenditure of mana. The Ninth Edition printing, released in 2005, represents a period when Wizards of the Coast was focused on refreshing the 'Core Set' experience, streamlining the aesthetic to appeal to a new generation of players while maintaining the core mechanics that defined the game's early years.

The artwork for this specific printing was created by Greg Staples, who utilized a bold, dramatic style to capture the essence of a dragon's flame. By depicting the raw, destructive energy of fire being channeled through a creature, Staples aimed to visually communicate the card’s simple but aggressive utility. The design was well-received for its clarity, fitting seamlessly into the standardized layout of the Ninth Edition, which was the first core set to utilize the modern card frame for its entire duration, ensuring a cohesive look for the legacy spell.
