Firemane Angel

Firemane Angel was released in 2005 as part of the Ravnica: City of Guilds expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a centerpiece card for the Boros Legion—the guild representing law, order, and militant justice—the design emphasizes the Boros philosophy of combining red's aggressive impulse with white's defensive structure. It reflects the set's focus on multicolored mechanics, serving as a powerful late-game threat that rewards players for long-term resource management through its graveyard-based abilities.

The artwork was created by illustrator Greg Staples, who rendered the Angel with a focus on dramatic, cinematic lighting and the harsh, structured aesthetics of the Ravnica plane. Staples sought to capture the intimidating yet righteous nature of the Boros guild through sharp, metallic armor and ethereal wings. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the competitive community for its unique utility in control decks, eventually becoming a notable staple in various formats during its time in the active card pool.
